Ancient Medical Uses

The Edwin Smith Papyrus — an ancient Egyptian medical text dating to approximately 1600 BCE (possibly copied from an even earlier source) — recommends copper compounds for treating infections. Ancient Hindu texts recommend storing water in copper vessels. Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician, used copper compounds to treat leg ulcers and pulmonary conditions. Medieval surgeons used copper-based compounds on wounds.

In every case, the observation preceded the understanding by millennia. Ancient practitioners knew copper worked for wound treatment and water purification — they categorised it as having medicinal properties without understanding the mechanism. The oligodynamic effect that explains these observations wasn't described scientifically until the late 19th century.

FDA Approval and Modern Healthcare

The US FDA approved copper as an antimicrobial surface material in 2008, following research demonstrating measurable reductions in pathogen survival on copper surfaces compared to stainless steel or plastic. This approval was the result of decades of accumulated research and clinical trials, and it opened the door to deliberate use of copper surfaces in healthcare settings specifically for infection control.

Multiple controlled trials have shown statistically significant reductions in healthcare-associated infections in rooms fitted with copper surfaces on high-touch items (door handles, bed rails, call buttons, nurse station surfaces). The effect size varies across studies but is consistently positive — copper surfaces reduce infection rates, the question is by how much and in which specific applications.

Copper-Based Medications

Beyond surface applications, copper compounds are used in several medical contexts: copper intrauterine devices (the 'copper coil' contraceptive) work partly through copper's toxicity to sperm and the inflammatory response it induces; copper compounds are used in dermatological treatments; and copper is a component of some wound dressings designed to promote healing and reduce infection. Research into copper's potential in treating specific diseases, including some viral and parasitic conditions, continues in academic medical settings.
